Feeling of depression may be described as feeling sad, down in the dumps, unhappy and miserable. Most of us go through this situation at some point of time, but for a short period of time. When this situation is disturbing you from a longer time, you may have depression problem. A true clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, anger and frustration interfere in our everyday life.Depression affects brain, hence the medications and drugs that can reach the brain may offer some hope. Common antidepressants may help you in reducing the symptoms of depression and prevent its re-occurrences. Each antidepressant works to balance certain chemicals in your brain called neurotransmitters. These drugs work in slightly different way to ease your depression symptoms. They help to improve your mood and emotion, although the process is not fully understood. Anti-drugs just reduce the symptoms of depression and do not address its causes. They are usually combined with the therapies to treat severe depression or other mental health issues. Some common antidrugs used for the treatment of depression are here.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) -:
They are the most common prescribed drugs for depression. An imbalance of serotonin may play a major role in depression. These drugs fight off against depression symptoms by decreasing serotonin reuptake in the brain. They have fewer side effects but overdose is likely to produce serious complications. Fluoxetine is known as the best SSRI drugs. Some other common SSRI are citalopram (Cipramil), paroxetine (Seroxat) and sertraline (Lustral). They are also used in the treatment of social phobia, panic disorder and compulsive disorder. However, the fewer side effects that it includes are nausea, trouble sleeping and sexual problems.
Serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) -:
They are similar to SNRIs and designed to be more effective antidepressant than SSRIs. In addition of treating depression, it may also relieve pain. This is important because chronic pain can lead to depression problem. Common SNRI includes duloxetine (Cymbalta and Yentreve) and venlafaxine (Efexor). A drug that treats both depression and pain such as duloxetine can be helpful for the people suffering from this chronic disorder. Unfortunately they also have some side effects such as dry mouth, fatigue, constipation and nausea.
Noradrenaline and specific serotonergic antidepressants (NASSAs) -:
They are effective for the people who cannot take SSRIs. The side effects of these drugs are similar to that of SSRIs. However, it is said that they cause fewer sexual problems. The main NASSAs is mirtazapine (Zispin).
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) -:
TCAs are the older type of antidepressants. They are not recommended as the first option to treat depression because overdose of these can lead to serious side effects. They also cause more side effects than SNRI and SSRI. However, TCAs may be recommended for other health issues and chronic nerve pain. Common TCAs include trimiparine, amitriptyline, lofepramine (Gamanil) and nortriptyline (Allegron)
Always remember a one thing, whenever you start taking these medicines you should first consult your doctor. When they prescribe you anyone of these, you should start from lowest possible dose to reduce the symptoms. Many people get great relief from using antidepressants. They are effective in providing quick relief from severe pain and other associated symptoms of depression. Also, whenever you get this problem of depression, you need to learn skills to reduce it instead taking drugs to reduce its symptoms. Anti-drugs may cause side effects which are really annoying. They have shown to be effective in one-third of cases with partial success in another third, but are ineffective in remaining third. The question – are the drugs really helpful in treating depression? Anti-drugs can give you good result for short period but in long run they cause serious side effects which can make your problem even worse. It is better to adopt a natural treatment option to treat your depression problem. You should address the causes of depression and should work on it. Medication with therapies, herbal supplements, exercise and meditation work better than anti-drugs. You may also ask your doctor as they may give you better options to treat your problem.
